The book is a collection of 60 selected articles, reviews, essays and interviews on different aspects of music, with a Preface by the eminent Australian historian John Hirst.

Included in the book are interviews with a wide variety of performers such as opera singers Renee Fleming and Morag Beaton, opera administrator Moffat Oxenbould and opera conductor Carlo Felice Cillario;  Broadway composers or writers, including Mary Rodgers, Michelangelo Alasa and Cy Coleman; writers and composers of Australian Musicals, including Nick Enright, Anthony Crowley, Dennis Watkins and Alan John; and classical composers and artists including Lachlan Redd, Peter Sculthorpe, Ross Edwards, Tamara-Anna Cislowska and Geoffrey Tozer.

More than fifty of the articles in the book were published by Ellikon in The Melburnian during Johnston’s time as the magazine’s music writer and critic (1992 – 1998).

Each of these is prefaced by additional text to place the original piece in context in 2011. The remaining articles were either in draft when the magazine ceased publication in 1998 or were written especially for the book.

The book is published by Ellikon Publishing and retails for $29.95
